Progressive Morality
'Right and wrong' isn't about policing each other. It's about uplifting each other. It’s about love, acceptance, and caring. Both in spirit and in policy.
America is facing a moral crisis.
72% of Americans say our country’s moral compass is pointed in the wrong direction. Half say we have poor values, while 77% believe that morality in America is only getting worse.
This is because we're focused on the wrong things:
🤑
Megachurch preachers say that tax breaks for the super-rich and large corporations are godly.
🧛
Conservative leaders demonize the social programs that allow people to live with dignity.
🚔
Extremists are telling us that policing an individual's identity is our highest moral priority.
💰
Our business elites insist that investing in our people over inflating corporate profits makes us weak.
This isn't what Jesus preached.
He preached love, acceptance, and caring. He called us to look after each other and uplift each other, not to police each other.Even the Pope has "criticized the church for putting dogma before love, for prioritizing moral doctrines over serving the poor and marginalized." He warns that "it is not necessary to talk about these issues [abortion, sexual orientation, etc.] all the time... We have to find a new balance, otherwise the freshness of the church will fall." The Pope has a "vision of an inclusive church, a 'home for all.'"
This is progressive morality.
How we show love through policy:
Universal, affordable healthcare
"Be shepherds of God's flock, watching over them – not because you must, but because you are willing."
"And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, healing every disease and every affliction."
People Over Profit economic policies
"Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty."
"Whoever has two coats must share with those who have none."
Humane immigration
"I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
"When a stranger sojourns in your land, you shall treat him as the native among you, and love him as yourself."
A decent home for all
"If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him and he shall live with you."
"Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality."
